EOI enters into a commercial market with ClassOne Orthodontics

The product will make use of selenium-based coating developed by Tech researchers Ted Reid and Julian Spallholz that's an oral hygiene sealant applied to brackets, ligature, ties and closing chains associated with braces.

The coating, according to Gallagher, vastly reduces microbial plaque build up by interacting with the mouth's own saliva.

Gallagher estimates ClassOne's sales could grow from $7 million-to-$10 million annually to $140 million over five years as SeLECT is rolled nationally and globally to 43 foreign countries.

"It's a fabulous example of the public and private sectors working together," said the company's lender, Charles Key, senior vice president at Lubbock National Bank.

"When you look at the synergies that are being created by these two companies, it's just incredibly exciting," he said.

Gallagher, who on Monday announced the creation of 40 new jobs, said ClassOne expects to eventually employ 115 workers, many involved high-paying administrative, marketing and other technical positions.

Gallagher said ClassOne and the Tech researchers had to refine the selenium formula over a period of several weeks to get the recipe right.

"It's not like baking a cake and watching it rise. It had to be reformulated until it finally worked, but it takes time to produce," Gallagher said.

For example, just to produce a kilogram of the mixture took an estimated about two months.
